On February 15, 2009, news of Joe “Sonny” Cuba’s death arrived as a tribute album was being planned for him. Born Gilberto Navarro in 1931, Cuba faced hardships, including being in foster care during the Great Depression. He later reunited with his mother. Influenced by the music around him, he learned to play conga and eventually led the Joe Cuba Sextet, producing popular hits like “Bang Bang” and “El Pito. ” His performances were dynamic, taking place in famous venues, and he was known for his engaging style and humor. The tribute album showcases his unique sound and features other singers who contributed to his music. It highlights his ability to cross genres and includes both lively and romantic tracks, celebrating his enduring legacy in Latin music.
