Papo Vazquez Bio
Vázquez is greatly influenced by jazz, particularly by John Coltrane and J. J. Johnson, and blends Afro-Caribbean rhythms with progressive jazz. In the 1980s, he experimented with “bomba jazz” in Puerto Rico and released his first album, Breakout, in 1993. He collaborated with various Latin Jazz artists, contributing to projects like Manhattan Mambo and Descarga Boricua, Vol. 1. He formed the group Pirates Troubadours, an Afro-Puerto Rican jazz band, which performed globally and released several albums.
His recognition grew as a composer, leading to a commission for the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra and his first classical composition, Palomita – Afro-Caribbean Suite, premiered in 2004. He composed Sube el Rio in 2007 for his Mighty Pirate Orchestra. The following year, he expanded the Pirates Troubadours, creating new music for a 19-piece orchestra, resulting in the Grammy-nominated album Papo Vázquez Mighty Pirates Marooned/Aíslado. Vázquez debuted his composition “Oasis” in 2009 and developed the Oasis Project in 2010. He has shared his works with artists like Ruben Blades and Hilton Ruiz.
