Bobby Matos Bio
Bobby Matos, born in the Bronx, started his music journey by playing on pots and pans in his grandmother’s apartment. He learned conga drumming from masters like Patato Valdez and Mongo Santamaria and studied composition at the Manhattan School of Music. In the early 1960s, he performed in various venues, including Greenwich Village cafes, dance halls in the Bronx, and even Carnegie Hall.
After working with artists like Ben Vereen and Bette Midler, he moved to Los Angeles to form an Afro Cuban Jazz band, blending different musical influences. In the 1980s and 1990s, he recorded several albums, earning grants from the City of Los Angeles and the California Arts Council. He also toured schools, conducting educational performances and workshops.
In 2004, he released “Made By Hand,” a live album on Life Forcejazz Records. His next album, “Acknowledgment,” featured original compositions and arrangements of John Coltrane’s work, along with a talented band that included his son, Jud.
