Rebeca Mauleón bio

Mauleón was born in 1962 in Santa Monica, California, and started her career as a performer and recording artist in her teens, collaborating with many musicians across genres. She has written about Latin and Caribbean music history, including the Salsa Guidebook. Throughout her career, she has worked with famous artists and has been one of the few female leaders in Afro-Caribbean jazz.

She has produced a variety of music projects, and her solo albums have reached top-ten positions in Latin music charts. Mauleón has performed at major festivals and served as musical director for Mickey Hart’s Planet Drum ensemble. She has received awards, teaches music, and has been a music consultant for National Geographic, becoming the Director of Education at SFJAZZ in 2011. Critics praise her dynamic piano style and leading authority in Latin jazz today.
