San Francisco-based Latin band Cabanijazz Project is led by Grammy Award-winning composer and conga player Javier Cabanillas. He recently transitioned from performing on the streets of Tijuana, Mexico, to winning a Grammy for his work with the Pacific Mambo Orchestra, beating nominees like Marc Anthony and Carlos Vives for Best Latin Tropical Album of the Year. Now residing in the Bay Area, Cabanillas focuses on writing and arranging music that blends jazz harmonies with Afro-Caribbean rhythms. The seven-member band performs original music and showcases musicians from varied genres. Cabanillas’ compositions received a 4-star rating in DownBeat Magazine, and Cabanijazz Project has been featured on NPR, PBS, and United Airlines. They have released three studio albums since 2018 and are currently recording their fourth in 2022.
