Chris Washburne Bio

Chris Washburne is an internationally acclaimed trombonist, ethnomusicologist, author, and educator whose career bridges performance, scholarship, and teaching. He is Professor and Chair of the Department of Music at Columbia University, where he founded the Louis Armstrong Jazz Performance Program. His research and publications have made him a leading authority on jazz, Latin jazz, and salsa, including his acclaimed book Latin Jazz: The Other Jazz.

As a performer, Washburne has appeared on more than 150 recordings, including multiple Grammy-winning and Grammy-nominated projects. Widely recognized as one of New York’s premier trombonists, he has earned repeated “Rising Star Trombone” honors in the DownBeat Critics Poll and has built a reputation for blending jazz, Afro-Cuban, and Latin American musical traditions into a distinctive and influential style.
