Paquito D’Rivera Bio
Cuban saxophonist, clarinetist, and composer Paquito D’Rivera excels in both Latin jazz and orchestral music. His work is recognized for its creativity and skill, earning him five GRAMMYs and nine Latin GRAMMYs for his contributions to various music genres, including jazz tango and Afro Cuban jazz.
D’Rivera has released over 40 albums, showcasing a mix of jazz, Latin music, and classical traditions. He has collaborated with many artists, such as Yo-Yo Ma and the Barcelona Clarinet Players, whose recent album honoring him won multiple awards.
He has composed a wide range of classical works, including a piece called Merengue, which received a GRAMMY Award. His classical music often reflects his diverse influences. For example, he wrote Conversations with Cachao as a tribute to the bassist Cachao Lopez, and The Cape Cod Files combines different musical styles.
D’Rivera has received notable fellowships and honors and has had compositions commissioned by prestigious organizations. This season, his Concerto Venezolano is being performed with acclaimed orchestras, after winning Best Classical Contemporary composition at the 2023 Latin GRAMMY Awards. Other recent premieres include works for clarinet, cello, and symphonic ensembles.
