Paquito D’ Rivera Bio

Paquito D’Rivera is a celebrated artist known for blending Latin American music with jazz. A Grammy winner with over thirty solo albums, he plays soprano and alto saxophones as well as clarinet. Born in Cuba on June 4, 1948, Paquito was a child prodigy and formed innovative music groups during his teenage years. He was a founding member and co-director of the musical ensemble Irakere, which fused various music styles and won Grammy nominations and awards.

D’Rivera gained recognition as a solo artist in 1996 with his album Portraits of Cuba and has since won multiple awards, including his 8th Grammy for Best Classical Recording in 2023. He has received various honors throughout his career, including a National Medal for the Arts and a Doctorate Honoris Causa in Music from Berklee School of Music. He is also the first artist to win Latin Grammys in both Classical and Latin Jazz categories.
