Eddie Palmieri Bio

Eddie Palmieri is a renowned pianist, bandleader, arranger, and composer known for his work in salsa and Latin jazz over the past 60 years. He skillfully combines his Puerto Rican roots with jazz influences from artists such asThelonious Monk and Herbie Hancock. His parents emigrated from Puerto Rico to New York City, where he was born and raised. Palmieri began learning the piano early and joined his uncle’s orchestra at 13, later playing with various bands in the 1950s.

In 1961, he formed his band La Perfecta, known for its unique use of trombones instead of trumpets, blending jazz with Afro-Caribbean rhythms. After disbanding in 1968, Palmieri returned to its music years later. In the 1970s, he enhanced his arranging skills and released significant recordings, including “Harlem River Drive,” which merged Black and Latin music into a new sound. He won the first Grammy for Best Latin Recording in 1975 and has since won ten Grammys.

Palmieri has received multiple accolades for his contributions to music, including the Eubie Blake Award and the Jazz Master award from the NEA. His composition “Azucar Pa’ Ti” was added to the National Recording Registry, showcasing his impact on the recording industry. He continued to innovate over the years, releasing new music and collaborating with notable artists. In 2020, despite the pandemic, he performed live and released music online. In 2024, he is set to celebrate his 88th birthday with new music, video content, and a direct fan e-commerce platform on his website.
