Dave Samuels Bio
Dave Samuels, a skilled mallet player known for his work with the vibraphone and marimba, passed away on April 22 in New York City at the age of 70 after a prolonged illness. He won Grammy and Latin Grammy awards and was a key member of the band Spyro Gyra, as well as a co-founder of The Caribbean Jazz Project and multiple other groups.
Throughout his career, Samuels collaborated with many prominent musicians, including Chet Baker, Paul McCandless, and Frank Zappa. The Caribbean Jazz Project, which formed in 1993, featured Samuels initially alongside Paquito D’Rivera and Andy Narell. Samuels later led the group, which received Grammy recognition for its albums, including “The Gathering” in 2002 and “Afro Bop Alliance” in 2008.
Samuels was also involved with Spyro Gyra from 1977 to 1994, contributing to several successful records. As a solo artist, he released multiple albums and worked on projects, including a Grammy-winning recording with jazz singer Nancy Wilson. He co-founded The Mallet Duo with David Friedman, enhancing the visibility of mallet instruments. Additionally, he was an accomplished educator, writing books on vibraphone technique.
