Marlon Simon Bio
Marlon Simon, an educator, percussionist, and composer, was born in Punta Cardón, Venezuela. He was first exposed to music at age 10 through his father, Hadsy Simon, who was a guitarist and singer. Marlon began playing drums at 15 and learned Latin music styles by listening to local dance bands. By 18, he formed his own band and performed at concerts and clubs. His interest in jazz grew at 19 after watching a video of famous jazz musicians. In 1987, he moved to the United States to study drums formally at The University of The Arts in Philadelphia, later receiving a grant from the Philadelphia Music Foundation. He moved to New York in 1989 and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Jazz and Contemporary Music.
Marlon worked with notable musicians like Hilton Ruíz and Chucho Valdés, and later formed his own Latin jazz ensemble, Marlon Simon and The Nagual Spirits. He released several albums, including “The Music of Marlon Simon” and “Live in La Paz, Bolivia. ” After some time in France, he produced two albums that showcased his unique Latin Jazz style, reflecting influences from Venezuela and French-Celtic music.
Marlon has performed internationally and is recognized as an educator in Afro-Caribbean rhythms. He has led workshops at various universities and schools and received multiple accolades, including the New Jersey Governor’s Award in Arts and Education. In 2003, he represented the U. S. at two international concerts as an ambassador of American artistry. In 2023, Marlon received a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship for jazz composition.
