Paquito D’Rivera Bio
Paquito D’Rivera, born on June 4, 1948, in Havana, Cuba, is a renowned saxophonist, clarinetist, composer, and writer, celebrated for his contributions to Latin Jazz and classical music. He has won 16 awards, including Grammys and Latin Grammys. He started studying music at five with his father, a classical saxophonist, and became a child prodigy, performing publicly at seven. By age ten, he played with the National Theater of Cuba’s orchestra and later studied at a conservatory.
At 17, D’Rivera co-founded the Cuban Modern Music Orchestra and frequently played with the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba. He was instrumental in creating the influential band ‘Irakere,’ which mixed jazz, rock, classical, and Cuban music, and gained a Grammy in 1979. D’Rivera has more than 40 solo albums and helped form the ‘United Nation Orchestra’ with Dizzy Gillespie, which won a Grammy in 1991.
Aside from jazz, he shines in classical music, performing with many noted orchestras worldwide and creating compositions for classical ensembles and soloists. His piece ‘Merengue’ won him a Grammy in 2004. D’Rivera is published by Boosey and Hawkes, and his various commissions demonstrate his diverse musical style. He has written several books on music, including ‘My Sax Life’ and a nostalgic novel titled ‘Oh, Havana! ‘
D’Rivera’s accolades include the NEA Jazz Masters Award, the National Medal of the Arts, and the Living Jazz Legend Award. He has received honorary doctorates and numerous awards throughout his career. His compositions often reflect his cultural roots and he has served in leadership roles in various jazz organizations and festivals.
In 2022, he reunited on stage with musician Chucho Valdés, a significant influence in his life, leading to their Grammy-winning album “I Missed You Too! ” Paquito D’Rivera continues to be a vital figure in both jazz and classical music, promoting musical interculturality.
