Mario Bauzá Bio

Prudencio Mario Bauzá arrived in New York from Havana in 1930, bringing a deep understanding of Cuban music and American jazz. Known as “the father of Latin Jazz,” he was born on April 28, 1911, in Cuba and began formal music lessons as a child. By the age of nine, he was a clarinetist with the Havana Philharmonic Orchestra. He recorded with Charanga Francesa at fourteen, then trained in trumpet with Lázaro Herrera. After returning to New York, he collaborated with notable figures, including Antonio Machin and Chick Webb. Bauzá learned jazz techniques and dynamics under Webb and spent time with other renowned musicians, including Dizzy Gillespie. Mario Bauzá was a member of his brother-in-law’s band, Machito and the Afro-Cubans.  Bauzá was instrumental in recruiting top jazz musicians to record with Machito such as, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Cannonball Adderly, Buddy Rich, Harry “Sweets” Edison and other jazz luminaries of that era.
